The City Police's Head of Operations is calling on members of the public to ensure that their cars are road-worthy before embarking on a long-distance journey for the festive season.

Deputy Chief Eliaser Iyambo made the call during a road safety day held at the City Police Headquarters in Windhoek.

As part of the National Festive Season Road Safety Campaign under the theme 'Do the Right Thing and Save Lives', the City Police held a road worthy vehicle inspection day where drivers got their cars tested for road worthiness for free.

''We are inviting motorists or members of the public to come and assert whether their vehicle has some defects. This is being done on a voluntary basis, and if we find defects, we are not going to issue fines because most people are scared of tickets. We are just going to advise what is expected of the person before they embark on the road for the festive season.''

The vehicles were tested on the Mobile Vehicle Testing Station (MVTS), which detects any faults with the car.

The MVTS is fitted with cutting-edge technology and equipment, ensuring precise and efficient testing of numerous areas such as brakes, lights, and overall safety compliance.

Drivers are offered guidance and advice based on their vehicle's findings.

Road Safety Day is a joint initiative between the Windhoek City Police and the Roads Authority.

The Road Authority will have the MVTS at Windhoek Okapuka Road Block, the Mareintal Road Block, and Swakopmund Road Block during the festive season.
