A towering figure in the fight against Apartheid, a gallant comrade in the liberation struggle, and a true statesman who dedicated his life in service to Namibia.

These are just some of the fitting tributes used by the diplomatic corps in Ghana, joined by Namibians and Ghanaians during the memorial service in Accra.

The service honoured the life and legacy of the late President Geingob by Namibia's High Commission to Ghana.

Many of the mourners in Accra had personal encounters with the late Namibian leader in various capacities, some even before Namibia gained independence.

However, his encounters at the Zambia-based UN Institute for Namibia foretold the depth of his passion for Namibia and Africa at large.

The late Geingob's humble beginnings and political awakening were influenced by Ghana's founding President Kwame Nkrumah, and this saw him embark on this journey when he rose up against the divisive Bantustan education system before going into exile.

The late President Geingob's voice in ensuring the speedy ratification of the AFCFTA agreement by Namibia and more than 50 African countries has also been acknowledged.

The Accra-based AfCFTA Secretariat says his efforts remain a testament to the ideals of continental integration envisioned by the forefathers.
