Two minors have died, while six are hospitalised at the Rundu Intermediate Hospital due to suspected food poisoning.

This happened at Livayi Village, 155 kilometres east of Rundu in the Ndiyona Constituency.

Six of the children are related, while the other two are neighbours who also consumed the food.

According to family members who spoke to nbc News, a 13-year-old boy had prepared a lunch consisting of porridge and mutete, which the children consumed.

Another meal consisting of porridge and soup was prepared by an older relative for supper, which the minors also consumed.

At about 19:00, one of the minors, a seven-year-old girl, started vomiting. The situation deteriorated, and she died at home.

Soon after, another one-year-old minor started showing similar symptoms.

Suspecting that the symptoms might be related to the food they consumed, the family gave them milk to induce vomiting.

They then called the police in Ndiyona, who arrived with a healthcare worker.

According to the police report, the medical officer started giving first aid to stabilise the children before taking them to Nyangana Hospital, from where they were later transferred to Rundu Intermediate Hospital.

The youngest victim, a one-year-old female, died at the Rundu hospital.

A team from NamPol and the Ministry of Health collected samples of the food source for testing. Investigations into the matter continue.
