Stateless and undocumented persons flood kavango East office

The Home Affairs office at Rundu is inundated with stateless and undocumented persons who turned up for the mass registration process over the past few weeks. 

Stateless and undocumented people of all ages have been flooding the home affairs building in the hopes of getting registered and possibly qualifying for Namibian social grants. 

That is the word on the street, but the Deputy Director of Civil Registration in the northeast, Fillemon Shipena, says they have been misinformed. 

Institutions remember Cassinga Day

Even though the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology announced that there would be no government-planned events to commemorate Cassinga Day, various local businesses took to social media to pay homage to the hundreds of men, women, and children massacred on this day in 1978. 

MTC kept it simple with a silhouette of a saluting soldier standing in front of the Namibian flag. 

On its social media page, MTC said the picture is about honouring the victims while standing in solidarity with their families. 

Swapo Party members in Kapako accuse leadership of discrimination

Some Swapo Party members in Kapako in the Kavango West Region are accusing the leadership of discrimination and intimidation. 

The SPYL District Secretary for Kapako says, even though Valentinus Munkara was elected as the district coordinator last year, the Secretary General's office recognises Maurus Nekaro instead. A decision that they reject. 

During a media briefing at Kapako over the weekend, SPYL District Secretary of Kapako, Stefanus Kudumo, said the party leadership is undermining the democratic rights of its members. 

Healthcare services in Kavango East affected by growing population

Healthcare services in the Kavango East Region are unable to cater to the region's population growth. 

Kavango East Governor, Bonifatius Wakudumo, says health facilities are crumbling under pressure, not only from locals but also from patients needing treatment from neighbouring Angola. 

The region is vast, and locals who can afford it are sometimes forced to travel long distances for medical care, but for the unfortunate majority, it is a different story. 

In March, four minors from Livayi village died of suspected food poisoning. 

Health service delivery set to improve in Kavango East

The Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula, says service delivery in the Kavango East health directorate is set to improve with the allocation of more than N$217 million from the national budget. 

Dr. Shangula, who was speaking at the World Health Day celebrations in Rundu on Monday, says the Ministry of Health is undertaking various capital projects countrywide, and significant changes are expected to take place in Kavango East. 

These include ICU and dialysis-related services.

Debt Struggles: UNAM students blocked from obtaining qualification certificates,transcripts

Potential graduates from the University of Namibia (UNAM) who are in arrears are currently unable to obtain their qualification certificates or academic transcripts.

This has caused concern among many students who are scheduled to graduate next month, as they worry about the impact of their university debt on their future prospects.

Previously, Unam allowed potential graduates to access their qualification certificates and academic transcripts even if they were in arrears, provided that they cleared their debt before receiving their official documents.

NID carries out civic education campaigns

With the general elections slated for November this year, the Namibia Institute for Democracy (NID) is carrying out civic education campaigns countrywide. 

The institute paid a visit to Unam's Rundu Campus to engage students in the "Namibia Needs Me" campaign.

The "Namibia Needs Me" campaign is all about strengthening democratic participation, and NID's Executive Director, Naita Hishoono, says institutions like universities are a great place to start.
