President Nangolo Mbumba is confident that the Combating of Domestic Violence Act will lead to a reduction of gender-based violence in Namibia.

In a statement released on the eve of International Women's Day, President Mbumba said that while Namibia has made progress in addressing gender equality, the gaps remain in the fight to end the unabating scourge of gender-based violence.

He called on Namibians to strive for an inclusive Namibian House that is committed to investing in the empowerment of women and creating a future of shared prosperity where women lead lives with dignity and without violence.

President Mbumba pointed out that International Women's Day is a unique platform for the country to reflect on the strides made to rally behind the inclusion of women in leadership positions.

He further reiterated Namibia's commitment to increasing the number of women in decision-making positions.

A demonstration of this commitment was the appointment of women to Vice-President and Prime Minister positions, respectively.

Currently, women constitute 49% of Namibia's Parliament, up from the 7% observed at independence in 1990.

International Women's Day is commemorated annually on March 8th.
