The Student Union of Namibia (SUN) has called on the Namibia Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) to immediately commence with the monthly payments of the non-tuition fee by the end of this month to avert a strike.

NASFAF has not released the student non-tuition fee since January this year. 
 
SUN President Benhard Kavau indicates that education is a fundamental right and, without financial assistance, it limits students' ability to pursue their academics. 

The union also wants the non-tuition fee extended to all Namibian students.

In its search for answers, the union says Kavau reached out to NSFAF in February this year and was informed, however, that they are waiting for the budget.

Kavau says the union can no longer wait for the budget as most students are facing challenges.

The Gender and Social Welfare Director of the Student Union, Hilma Amadhila, explained that most students depend on the monthly non-tuition fee to carry out their academic activities.

In addition, the union is urging all institutions of higher learning to prioritise the timely submission of invoices to NSFAF.

NSFAF is also implored to speed up contact with the new students to allow them access to examination halls.

Contacted for a comment, the NSFAF's CEO, Kennedy Kandume, explained that the financial year only starts in April.
