The Ovambanderu community gathered over the weekend at Talismanus in the Otjombinde Constituency to pay homage to fallen heroes buried at one of the historical burial sites.

Among those remembered is Claudius Heuva, who played an integral role when the Ovambanderu people fled the Aminuis reserve area to Otjombinde.

The event started off with horseback riding and drilling, celebrating the legacy of the late pioneers of the Otjombinde area.

The gathering also represents another milestone within the community when it comes to preserving culture and customs.

Speaking at the event, Senior Traditional Councillor of the Ovambanderu Traditional Council, Dave Tjozongoro, emphasised that such gatherings foster unity and promote peaceful co-existence with other traditional authorities.

This is the legacy of those who are no more.

While recognising the role played by the fallen heroes, Ombara Aletha Nguvauva pleaded with traditional leaders to equally recognise women who played the same role as men.

"Until when will women be pushed behind? Women are powerful, and they know how to tackle issues just like men. We need to change the narrative and include women on all issues. I would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone, but next time we shall also expect other Ovambanderu people at this event."

This year's event was held under the theme "Towards mutual acceptance and harmonious fellowship."
