Two hundred and fifteen youth trainees have been deployed to three different government farms, where they are to commence with Phase 2 of the self-employment charcoal production project under the National Youth Service.
The trainees are part of the 631 that underwent voluntary charcoal training in 2025 at Gemsbok Pan Farm.
They will be based at Evaristus Shikongo Correctional Facility, Gemsbok Farm, and John Pandeni Farm for three months.
Executive Director in the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gerhard Vries, explained.
“Every one of you has the right to pursue this opportunity peacefully and productively. Voluntary participation means that you have freely chosen to accept this opportunity and to take responsibility for making the most of it.”
The government will provide them a monthly allowance of N$2,000 while on the farms.
Under phase 2, trainees will be equipped with skills in production, entrepreneurship, and economic independence.
A market has also been secured for the purchase of charcoal they will produce and keep the proceeds.
The trainees will further be provided with start-up equipment, tents, personal protective equipment, and assistance to establish and formalise cooperatives.
