The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) awarded registration certificates to seven private higher education institutions.
Institutions such as the University of Namibia (UNAM), the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), Sunshine Private College, Lingua, Welwitchia University, Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary (NETS), Philippi Trust Namibia, and the African Leadership Institute were recognised for their work.
Welwitchia University, previously known as Welwitschia Health Training Centre, has satisfied the criteria for university status and the amendment of its name.
UNAM, NUST, Sunshine Private College, Lingua, and the African Leadership Institute received certificates for accreditation programmes.
Additionally, NETS, Philippi Trust Namibia, Lingua, and Africa Leadership Institute have undergone institutional quality audits.
The Deputy Minister for Higher Education, Technology, and Innovation, Nathalia |Goagoses urged institutions to embrace innovation and push the boundaries of possibilities to grow the education sector.
"I urge higher education institutions to prioritise diversifying their programme offerings to equip students with skills that address the pressing needs of our time, including the impact of climate change, oil and gas, and green hydrogen. This endeavour is crucial in developing a skilled workforce that meets the evolving demands of the economy and ensures a sustainable future for our young people."
Deputy Executive Director of the National Council for Higher Education, Sylvia Demas, indicated that the ceremony serves as a testimony to the transparency and accountability that underpin the education system.
"Registration of private higher education institutions and pivotal mechanisms for maintaining and enhancing the quality of higher education. Each process serves distinct but irrigated purposes, contributing to the overall effectiveness, credibility, and continuous improvement of high education institutions in our country.
