Informal football leagues, run by community members, provide a platform to play football. Three popular leagues in Windhoek's informal settlements are still in full swing and aim to conclude their seasons later this year.
Now in week 15 of its season, the 7 de Laan Premier League was founded three years ago with the aim of developing raw, young aspiring footballers from the informal settlements to showcase their talents.
The league chairman, Erasmus Nghiikumbu, says that despite the challenges faced by the league, he is happy with the progress made since its inception.
Elia Kandjabanga, who heads one of the most popular informal leagues, the Samora Machel League, played at Havana Soccer Field, is excited about the level of competition in the first round
Another league thriving is the Tobias Hainyeko Soccer League, catering to 20 teams. Joseph Ntjamba, the league's secretary-general, expressed gratitude towards the Tobias Hainyeko community for supporting the league during official matches.
The leagues are expected to conclude in November and December, respectively.
These leagues serve as a feeder to second and first division leagues in the country. While some see them as just entertainment, many young and upcoming footballers see them as a stepping stone to a brighter future.
