Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) play a vital role in an economy, particularly in providing necessary goods, services, and employment opportunities for citizens.

On MSME Day, Danny Meyer, Director of SMEs Compete, addressed the importance of government officials being more supportive of the SME sector.

Meyer emphasizes that these smaller businesses are crucial for job security and national wealth. However, bureaucracy and a lack of communication between government departments and ministries often hinder their operations and prevent them from thriving.

"We are seeing more and more corporates recognizing the need to broaden their supply base by engaging smaller Namibian enterprises. There is no need to bring in outsiders to take care of tasks such as refrigerator or air-conditioning repairs. Local people have the skills for it. Whether it's a repair shop, fitting, construction work, or upgrading a shopping mall, there are local skills available."

Meyer explains that historically, many people were discouraged from starting their own businesses, resulting in a skills gap.

He encourages small business owners to seek guidance from mentors, including other entrepreneurs, when facing challenges.

"There are mentors within your community, and the best mentors are usually other entrepreneurs. Reach out to them. If you are currently facing a challenge, such as unreliable employees, issues with a business partner, or harsh suppliers, approach a larger business that is driven by an owner and ask for advice. You are not alone as an entrepreneur. Help is available. We truly appreciate your efforts."

Meyer is pleased that the contributions of the MSME sector are now more widely acknowledged and celebrated. He urges everyone to do their part in supporting local enterprises.
