Renovations at the Katutura Intermediate Hospital are about 50% complete, says the medical superintendent at the hospital, Nelago Amagulu.
The dilapidated state of the referral hospital made the rounds in the media, with patients mostly calling for its renovation.
The hospital admits people from all the regions of the country and therefore struggles with an influx of patients.
An amount of N$80 million is allocated in the current financial year for its renovations.
The first things that were attended to were the leaking roof, which was sealed, the fumigation of pests, and putting measures to prevent further pest infestations.
The walls received colourful, uplifting paint, with patient beds receiving privacy curtains, cables neatly spaced, oxygen tanks installed, and bathtubs turned into showers.
The fourth and seventh floors are so far completed, while the second, third, and sixth floors are currently under renovation. A contractor is yet to be assigned for the fifth and seventh floors.
Amagulu says they are working on restoring the hospital and the dignity of the patients and employees.
There have been some noted challenges of contractors not delivering as per expectations, but others, such as the Association of Unemployed Artisans in Namibia, have done outstanding work.
The first floor, which is the administration block, is expected to be completed last, after the critical sections.
While the maternity ward needs more planning for extension, it might take a few years.
The renovation of the hospital is expected to be completed early next year.
