National Council Swapo Party MP John Likando has expressed concerns about the inefficiency of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), particularly highlighting delays in the registration process.

Likando was speaking during the debate on the Electoral Amendment Bill.

The debate centred on the Electoral Amendment Bill, specifically on amendments to Section 74.

The amendment aims to allow members of the public service, National Council members, regional councils, and local authorities to participate equally in general elections.

Likando raised concerns about leave days for full-time elected officials and questioned whether these matters had been deliberately omitted from previous discussions in the National Assembly.

MP Bethuel Tjaveondja reminded the house about the rights of all citizens to participate in peaceful political activities aimed at influencing government policies.

Tjaveondja emphasised the need for equity in the treatment of politicians and other citizens, stressing that privileges such as leave days should apply equally across the board.
