Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo will not tolerate police officers selling contraband or those involved in criminal activities.
Lieutenant General Shikongo sounded the warning while addressing officers at the Oshikango police station in the Ohangwena Region.
He was disturbed to hear that two members of the police were arrested for allegedly stealing fuel at Oshikango.
Lieutenant General Shikongo also spoke about another case of police officers who confiscated 17 containers of fuel from community members, but when the containers were examined, some of them were filled with water.
He says it is a well-known fact that confiscated items are taken to the police station, where they are kept safe, and a case is then opened.
The police chief says officers are expected to preserve the internal security of Namibia, maintain law and order, investigate and arrest, prevent crime, and protect lives and properties.
The Police Inspector General says since last year, close to 8,000 men and women in uniforms have been promoted to serve as motivation to work even harder, but the end result is improper behaviour.
Shikongo is also worried about a lot of shooting incidents in the Ohangwena Region that need to be controlled because they have resulted in lawsuits against the police.
He called on commanders to guard their operations and see to it that members do not shoot civilians without their commands.
