As the Ministry of Health and Social Services' wellness games gain momentum, founder Kenneth Haipumbu advocates for the ministry to take ownership of the initiative and provide financial support.
Haipumbu made this appeal during the opening of this year's games in Outjo, Kunene Region.
Launched in Ohangwena in 2017, the wellness games expanded to include all ministry districts and regions in 2022, fostering competition for floating trophies and medals.
Haipumbu proposed that the Ministry assume full responsibility for the initiative.
Kenneth Haipumbu Founder of Health Wellness Tournament stated that ''A dedicated Employee Wellness division should be established in all regions. Sports are integral to wellness, and I propose the ministry sponsor soccer, netball, and volleyball kits for participating regions.
Additionally, he suggested providing tracksuits for players and offering support for health workers participating in the games.
Haipumbu emphasized the games' role in improving mental health, fostering teamwork, and promoting physical activity among staff.
Outjo Mayor Sieglinde Amamus praised the games for promoting a healthy lifestyle.
''This event encourages us to prioritize well-being, whether through stress management, healthy lifestyle choices, or relaxation''.
Kunene Governor Marius Sheya echoed the call for ministry ownership, highlighting the importance of employee well-being and the need for increased support.
The Governor Kunene Marius Sheya also spoke at the event ''The ministry should take ownership of these games, similar to other ministries. This initiative demonstrates the power of employee-driven initiatives, and we must provide the necessary support, including logistical and financial assistance, to ensure its success.'' he said
This year's games featured various health services, including male circumcision, HIV/AIDS testing, and dental care.
