Namibia's fuel, wood, and charcoal exports generated over N$102 billion last year, and the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism is satisfied with the recent growth in the biomass sector.

Minister Pohamba Shifeta remarked on this at the opening of the Standard Bank Biomass Fair at Otjiwarongo.

The charcoal industry is among the more mature sectors, having exported 270,000 metric tonnes last year.

Charcoal brings in export revenues of more than N$1.2 billion, and its value continues to improve.

Shifeta commended NamPower's first-ever biomass plant.

"A noteworthy development is the 40-megawatt NamPower Biomass Plant that the power utility is busy constructing near the town of Tsumeb. I am informed that this project will use encroucher bush and wood chips and will require an order of 180,000 to 240,000 metric tonnes per year. The project is going to create job opportunities for our young people and will ultimately contribute to the economic development of our country."

The Chairperson of the Namibia Biomass Industry Group, Colin Lindique, says the NamPower Biomass Plant will pave the way for other national projects within the sector.

"Not only is the construction of the plant already officiated, but also the offtake agreement for the fuel suppliers, which has now been committed and equates to 180,000 metric tonnes per annum going forward for the power plant."

The Head of Agribusiness at Standard Bank, Gerhard Mukuahima, says the biomass fair has grown over the years.

"This year's event with the theme Innovating for a Greener Future promises to be even more impactful. Over the next three days, we will engage in a series of dynamic activities that would expand our knowledge and formation of partnerships that could hold tremendous potential for our country and the biomass industry at large."

The conference explored vital aspects, including the government framework, environmental best practices, and access to local and international markets.

A biomass showcase event, hosting 120 exhibitors, is also lined up to demonstrate an extensive range of biomass products and cutting-edge technology.
