The 10th edition of the popular Navachab Marathon was launched in Windhoek with increased sponsorship and high participation anticipated.
The 2024 Navachab Marathon will attract the country's top athletes, as has been the norm over the past years.
This year's event will celebrate the marathon's 10th anniversary, making it a significant event to look forward to.
Speaking at the official launch in Windhoek , Race Director and Omaruru Regional Sport Officer Bertholt Karumendu said the flagship marathon, which takes place in the mining town of Karibib, has grown in leaps and bounds, with new heights expected in terms of prizes and participation.
Navachab Gold Mine Public Relations and Communication Officer Mclyn Kasale stated that the marathon, besides encouraging mass participation, also promotes local businesses in the community.
The marathon, scheduled for September 21st this year, will see an increase in sponsorship money to seven hundred thousand dollars, with half of the amount earmarked for the athletes' prizes.
The winner in the half marathon will take home. 20 thousand dollars, 2nd place, 15-thousand dollars and 3rd place 10- thousand dollars.
In the 10 Kilometres the winner will walk away with 10-thousand dollars, with the 2nd place scooping 7-thousand 500 hundred dollars and 3rd place, 5000-thousand dollars.
