Chaos almost broke out as members of the Former Refugees Repatriation Association of Namibia (FRRAN) refused to continue with a meeting they requested to be held with the United Nations (UN) and the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation (MIRCO).
Representatives of the UN, however, did not turn up for the meeting, and the association instead held a discussion with MIRCO Executive Director Penda Naanda.
The meeting was to discuss the way forward for the former refugees of Namibia who were repatriated in 1989 under United Nations Resolution 435 of 1978 and are demanding to be resettled and rehabilitated.
Naanda informed the group that the UN has already reiterated its position and response to this matter on several occasions.
He says the UN Namibia has exhausted its mandate and is no longer seized with this matter as it remains committed to the agreement reached in March 2021, prioritising the dialogue with national authorities.
To this end, he urged the group to reach out to the Ministry of Veterans Affairs to be assisted.
The group, however, reiterated the importance of the meeting between the three parties and has urged MIRCO to reengage the UN to make time to have the meeting.
