The Erongo Region has reported a 5% increase in crime over the past two years.
5,070 cases were reported last year in comparison to 5,332 reported this year between the period of January and July.
Erongo Police have identified possible causes of crime in the region in issues such as the influx of people in search of employment, greed, drug and alcohol abuse, and unemployment.
The most prevalent cases are housebreaking, robberies, and domestic violence cases; slapping; threats or killing; assault; theft of motor vehicles; and fraud.
Erongo Governor, in his State of the Region Address, said there are planned activities for the new financial year to curb crime, which include upgrading the police station in Swakopmund.
"I'm glad to report that the site was handed over to the contractor in July 2024. Additionally, the construction of the Okombahe and Omatjete Police Station, which includes the accommodation part, is complete. The outstanding part of phase one, which is the sewer connection and underground pipes, is budgeted for in phase 2. This phase started in August 2024 and will include the office block, charge office, and cell blocks. It is expected to be completed in July 2025. The project will only be handed over once it is fully completed."
