What role can communities play in fostering the growth of young sport talent in Oshikoto? Governor Penda Ya Ndakolo offered his insights during his recent state of the region address, urging parents, guardians, and teachers to become more actively involved.
Home to one of the largest national parks in Africa, Oshikoto region's governor is the last to deliver his address after hosting this year's Heroes Day commemoration at Omuthiya.
Ya Ndakolo emphasized sport as a key social issue that can greatly benefit society in terms of health, economic well-being, and recreation.
The former Defense minister further added that sport is generally regarded not only as a unifier but also as an economic opportunity creator, in terms of entrepreneurial activities at sport events as well as the pursuit of careers in sport.
Ya Ndakolo called on the community at large to support those involved in sport at all levels, while also highlighting the importance of the governor's cup in creating opportunities for all parties involved.
" I am therefore urging parents, guardians, and teachers to take sports development for our children seriously in order to reap those benefits. Sports keep the youth away from alcohol and other social ills and teach them discipline. That way, the future of our nation will be in good hands. During the period under review, all eleven constituencies in Oshikoto Region participated in the PST Bet Governor's Cup tournament. This sports event brought together around 5,000 fans, while 500 participants took part in various sports codes. The event also provided a platform for local vendors to sell their products, especially food, to the spectators" he said.
Ya Ndakolo also made a plea to all sport enthusiasts as well as business entities to do more in promoting sport, especially at the grassroots level.
