The Leader of the Hai||om San Gaob Dawid ||Khamuxab, aged 74, handed over the chieftaincy to his first son, Alfred ||Khamuxab, during the Hai||om San Cultural Festival at Seringkop farm in Outjo.

Gaob Dawid ||Khamuxab has been leading the Hai||om San Traditional Authority following his recognition in 2004.

However, since last year his health has begun to worsen, compelling him to take a decision to step down.

"Here is a hat as a symbol of my blessings, I will also give you a walking cane."

Alfred ||Khamuxab marks the second Gaob of the Hai||om San Traditional Authority.

"I am very proud of my father for handing me the things and also my people, and I will say to the Lord too the road forward."

The Chairperson of the Kunene Regional Council, Hendrik Gaobaeb, says it is very rare for a chief to hand over his chieftaincy while still alive.

"The Chief of Kaoko died, and disputes are still continuing on who should succeed him. The cars of their traditional authority are parked at the governor's office, yet people do not want to see beyond that and appoint a chief for themselves."

Gaobaeb commended Gaob ||Khamuxab for his brave and thoughtful decision not to lead till his last day.

Outjo Constituency Councilor Johannes Antsino called on all to embrace their culture.

"Continue marketing your culture and make sure that you have materials available for future generations to come and witness to come and see how things have been done and be the ones to occupy your current space for them to narrate to their generations to come."

The Hai||om San women launched and showcased their traditional dresses at the festival.
