Swakopmund residents will close the Namibian Heritage Week 2024 with a fashion show that aims to keep Namibian culture alive.
The Namibian Heritage Week 2024 opened at Swakopmund under the theme "Culture is Community, Community is Culture."
This year the focus is fashion as a medium to keep Namibia's heritage alive.
"We need to ignite a feeling and communication; we need to ignite a sense of belonging in our youth when it comes to fashion because fashion doesn't only create communication, but it also creates a bridge for the old generation to connect with the new generation. Please join us on the 20th of September, right here at the Swakopmund Museum, for an amazing fashion show," said Mr. Face of Namibia, Jonathan Harris.
Swakopmund-based fashion designer Belinda Revill and two others will be showcasing their Namibian heritage line at the fashion show.
"It has been a great pleasure and a great honour to work with Ms. Namibia World 2021. I was the designer for all of her gowns, and it was such a pleasure to bring the Namibian work to the stage internationally. We of course had 12 gowns for her; you would have seen them on social media, specifically the national costume. From there, I drew inspiration from our natural beauty, Spitzkoppe. The gown was called Starry Night, and it's a beautiful reflection of stone and the Milky Way. That gown is probably one of my most beautiful pieces, and it will be on show this Friday. So every young fashion designer in Namibia, I want to encourage you to dig deep and be passionate about what we stand for. There is only one voice for Namibia, and that voice is you."
