Deputy Prime Minister John Mutorwa has described the Katima Mulilo Correctional Facility construction as a significant milestone in the nation's pursuit of sustainable development and food security.
So far, phase one of the project, which includes clearing the 13.2 kilometres of the cutline by the National Youth Service, has commenced and will be followed by fencing and rehabilitation of the existing accommodation facilities during the 2025/2026 financial year.
The correctional facility, which is to be built on the Katima-Liselo farm, is expected to not solely house inmates serving time but also cultivate about 420 hectares of arable land, focussing on maize, wheat, sunflowers, and a variety of fruits and vegetables.
The Deputy Prime Minister said this at Friday's ground-breaking ceremony in Katima Mulilo.
