Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo emphasises that, in an era where the global policing landscape is rapidly changing due to advanced technology and rising cybercrime, police leadership must be forward-thinking, adaptable, and innovative.

He highlighted this point during the official opening of the five-day Success and Career Development Training in Swakopmund.

Lieutenant General Shikongo says the gathering marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to build a police force, not only prepared for the current challenges but also a force that can remain secure well into the future.

This, he says, can be achieved through deliberate and strategic leadership development, and succession planning should be about more than just passing the baton.

"The principle of succession is crucial in any organisation that wishes to sustain its effectiveness over time. We must identify, nurture, and develop future leaders who are capable of carrying forward the mantle of leadership, ensuring continuity, stability, and growth within the force. Today's training course is designed to achieve just that—to prepare senior officers like yourselves for higher responsibilities while setting in place a system that ensures the smooth transition of leadership."

The strength of the police force, he said, lies with the quality of its senior officers, who he said represent both leadership and the institutional memory through a wealth of experience that should drive the force forward.

"Hence, it is imperative that we continue to invest in your growth and development. Career development is not just about achieving personal goals; it's about aligning those goals with the overall vision and mission of the Namibian Police Force. By enhancing your skills, this course is not just an academic exercise; it is a practical and strategic initiative that will position the Namibian Police Force to be a proactive, professional, and people-centred institution for decades to come."

Participants are expected to develop a comprehensive understanding of the importance of succession planning, identifying key positions, developing talent, and aligning career development with organisational goals.
