The Standard Bank Youth League U/13 concluded on Saturday, with league matches aimed at preparing the teams for the upcoming National Development Festival.

Project Administrator Marion Handura informed NBC that plans are underway to host the Annual National Development Festival for Standard Bank Junior U/13 Hockey on November 2nd at the Davin Turf at Windhoek High School.

The Standard Bank Namibia Junior Hockey Initiative came to a successful close this weekend, with matches taking place across various regions.

The leagues in Windhoek and Katima Mulilo are among the largest, each involving around 100 children.

Several schools that participated in the Windhoek School Festival three days ago at Ella Du Plessis Secondary School are eager to showcase their talents at next month's tournament.

Marion Handura emphasised the progress made since June and highlighted the enthusiastic participation in regions such as Rehoboth, Okahandja, and Katima Mulilo, where local leagues are thriving.

"I am really happy with what we have done up to this point since June. The only towns that we have done were Rehoboth, Okahandja, and Windhoek. All the other towns have to run their own leagues and festivals because we have already given them two years of training in Katima. They are doing really well, and the kids are really enthusiastic. They are always happy, and they are always asking when the hockey starts."

According to Handura, the project administrator, many talented players have emerged, and the upcoming event is expected to attract over 1,000 players to compete in Windhoek.

"We have 14 regions and 16 towns. I want people to come and watch. Some people are interested in hockey, and kids in Khomasdal and Katutura are very neglected, and they are so interested. The parents are happy, and they say, "We are glad that you take our kids off the street."

She added that the festival will be a platform to celebrate the players, with medals and trophies being awarded.

All regional tournaments are expected to finish this weekend to allow ample time for teams to prepare for the National Festival next month.
