A heavy truck carrying an oxygen plant has arrived in Katima Mulilo after ten days on the road from Walvis Bay.

The oxygen plant stands 50 meters long, 5,4 meters wide, and weighs 171 tonnes.

It created quite the buzz on social media platforms, piquing the interest of many residents who gathered along the side of the road to see it.

Speaking to the NBC News team upon its arrival, the field manager and truck operator, Juan Johnson, said they had prepared for these challenges years in advance.

Johnson sits in the open between the front and back drivers where he operates.

Due to public and road safety concerns, the truck is stopped two hours before sunset daily and proceeds the next day, while also giving other road users a chance to pass every 15 minutes and avoid the delay of the truck's slow movement.

The consignment will only depart from Katima Mulilo for its final destination in Zambia on Monday.

Challenges on the other side of the border have also been anticipated and planned for.

Johnson said they had visited the Zambian route weeks ago to see what lies ahead and that there presently is a team of engineers levelling the route for a smooth drive once it reaches Zambia.

He indicated that they would drive out in a smaller car for inspections across the border before officially crossing over on Monday.

In the meantime, security has been organised around the consignment in order to keep curious residents from possibly ending up in places on the truck that aren't safe for them.
