The Minister in the Presidency, Christine ||Hoëbes, says Namibia is emerging as a prominent producer of green iron, poised to produce over 2 million tonnes of direct reduced iron (DRI) by 2030.
||Hoëbes said this during the HyIron Oshivela Project Site Visit and Project Milestones Announcement.
Together with relevant stakeholders, she says Namibia’s true potential is being realised while jobs are created, driving economic growth, and building a skilled workforce.
Thus far, HyIron has employed around 50 staff members and collaborated with over 60 Namibian companies, deploying more than 400 staff during construction.
This collaboration with relevant stakeholders has injected over N$90 million into the country’s economy, ensuring that more than 17% of the project value remains within the local communities.
By 2030, ||Hoëbes explains that HyIron envisions a workforce exceeding 1,500 as it operates a facility with 2 million tonnes per annum capacity in the Erongo Region. It will source iron ore from Opuwo and the Northern Cape while producing 100,000 tonnes of green hydrogen utilising Namibia’s abundant solar and water resources.
