Oshigambo High School and Dr. Alpo Mauno Mbamba Senior Secondary School will now incorporate ICT equipment into their learning materials for learners.

This follows the handover of media and IT equipment to the two schools by Huawei Technologies Namibia, which took place at State House today (Thursday). The decision to assist the schools with ICT equipment was confirmed during President Mbumba's visit to Huawei headquarters in Beijing in September. The donated items include smart tablets and interactive display hubs for use in classrooms.

"I trust that the regional education directors present here from Oshikoto and Kavango East, along with the chairpersons of the school boards and the principals, will ensure, under the guidance of the custodian minister and the executive director of the Ministry of Basic Education, Arts and Culture, and with assistance from MICT where necessary, that these donations are put to good use, well cared for, and empower our students to become proficient in technology."

The ICT equipment donation arrives as Namibia enters the age of the fourth industrial revolution, which the president states is driven by creativity and imagination to generate economic value. "Therefore, this is the first step in the right direction to encourage technological know-how, innovation, and creativity in our schools through the teaching aids donated by Huawei Namibia, valued at N$900,000."

This donation is part of Huawei Technologies' broader objective to support schools in regions where such equipment is urgently needed. Huawei Technologies Namibia's Managing Director, Zhang Qiyan, stated, "We believe education is the foundation of any nation's development, and by empowering schools with innovative digital tools, we are providing students with a better future and essential digital literacy."

The Ministry of Education notes that the donation complements its mandate to expand access to education, as outlined in its transformation plan. "It is important that we pursue this path because we are committed to providing every Namibian child with quality education. However, we cannot achieve this alone; it is crucial to have friends of education, as we see today," said Deputy Minister of Education Faustina Caley.

Senior grades will be prioritised for the ICT equipment at both Oshigambo High School and Dr. Alpo Mauno Mbamba Senior Secondary School.
