The Epukiro Post 3 Secondary School has unveiled a new borehole that was drilled to alleviate the water shortage that has been plaguing the school for years.

The borehole is expected to improve water provision for the school's 1,100 learners, most of whom are hostel dwellers.

The drilling of the borehole was made possible by the Osona Fishing Company, which injected N$341,000 into the project.

The borehole utilises solar power, which will make it cost-effective and more reliable in servicing the school.

Osona Fishing Board Chairperson Reinhardt lUribo said the company responded to the need for water to assist the school to maintain its position as one of Omaheke's best-performing secondary schools.

"We have to give thanks to Murangi and the chief too because they are the people that brought things to our attention. We had to put a few things out of the way so that we could accept this one. When you said it's the children; it's a human rights issue, we couldn't do otherwise. We are fathers, we are grandparents, and that's what touched us basically."

The Director of Education in the Omaheke Region, Constance Waantenaar, said the school's good academic performance had been threatened by the lack of water, as learners often find it difficult to study under these challenging conditions.

She said the donation is testimony to the good relations between the community and the education fraternity, which is worth applauding.

School principal Vetuesapi Uanivi said the new borehole will go a long way in making sure the school's teaching and learning activities continue unhindered.

He pledged that the school would take proper care of the facility in terms of the needed maintenance and servicing.

"As we experienced regular power outages, this assistance could not have come at a better time. Without a regular and reliable water supply, it was difficult to maintain the newly renovated facilities at the hostel since the cleaning of the facilities was a challenge without a steady supply of water. However, with the sponsorship, we can be assured of sustainable maintenance of a clean and stable hostel environment."

The Epukiro Secondary School scooped the best-performing school award in 2023 for both Grade 11 and Grade 12 in the Epukiro constituency and has remained in the top five best regional performers for the past three years.

The school currently has a staff complement of 47 teachers and 25 non-teaching employees.
