Namibia could soon export meat products to Qatar, following the expression of interest by the Gulf state.
This possibility was expressed as President Nangolo Mbumba left for Qatar to attend the 22nd Doha Forum, taking place this weekend.
The presidency says Dr. Mbumba would highlight issues of national importance, including the fight against poverty, Namibia's quest to modernize its logistics industry, and the importance of peace as a requisite for development.
Through the Doha Forum, which is a global platform, President Mbumba and other policymakers are expected to build innovative and action-driven networks.
The main objective is to address multi-dimensional challenges with action-oriented recommendations.
According to the presidency, the Namibian leader would use the opportunity to further consolidate the Namibia-Qatari relations across various areas of interest.
"Namibia and Qatar have established solid bilateral relations which have increased in terms of scope over the past 4 years, specifically in the areas of oil and gas, logistics, tourism as well as aviation. As we speak, Namibia and Qatar have a number of bilateral agreements that have been signed, including the air services agreement which saw Qatar Airways coming to Namibia, but unfortunately, it was interrupted for reasons beyond our control. However, discussions are ongoing to ensure that Qatar Airways resumes direct flights to Windhoek. It must also be mentioned that Qatar is one of the important players in our logistics. As one of the shareholders in one of the major shipping companies, Qatar is working closely with Namport to ensure that the Port of Walvis Bay and our ports, more broadly, become ports of choice for major shipping companies. Qatar has also expressed interest in Namibian meat, specifically lamb, so there are ongoing discussions to ensure that very soon Namibian meat products are in Qatar."
President Mbumba is expected to return to Namibia on Monday.
