A Namibian couple is proving that even in the face of persistent drought, strawberry farming can flourish with innovative and water-efficient practices.
The couple's dedication to sustainable agriculture has not only preserved their livelihood but has also set a benchmark for smart farming in arid conditions.
The Botes began their journey into strawberry farming during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
With time on their hands and a desire to explore new opportunities, they started with just 200 strawberry plants as a small-scale experiment.
Despite the high cost of strawberry seeds, the couple was determined to explore the potential of strawberry farming.
Facing water scarcity, the couple adopted techniques such as drip irrigation and covering to minimise water usage while maximising crop yield.
These methods ensure that every drop of water is efficiently utilised, keeping the strawberry plants hydrated and thriving despite the harsh climate.
Jeanine Botes, the co-owner of Grow Getters Strawberry Farm, said the Botes farm has become a local success story, demonstrating that strawberries can be a viable crop in Namibia's challenging environment, but with farming come challenges.
Beyond their own success, they are eager to share their strawberry plants with the Namibian public to encourage and support farming initiatives.
The couple also hopes to expand their farm and share knowledge with others.
