Every day, someone makes a positive impact on the life of someone else. Often, these everyday heroes' contributions go unacknowledged, but the community of Okahao honoured the late Elizabeth Shangula, a pioneer in public health.
Shangula was honoured through the naming of a community hall at Elcin Etilyasa Parish in Omamanzi.
The community of Okahao came together to celebrate the life of the late Dr. Elizabeth Shangula, a ceremony that was attended by those who knew her either as a family member, a friend, or a legend of change.
She was known for her contributions to the healthcare system and dedication to community service.
The late Dr. Shangula, who was a pioneer in public health and a loyal advocate for health policies in Namibia, was praised for her commitment to improving the lives of the citizens.
In her address, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila stated that the naming of the hall after the late Shangula is a way of memorialising her beyond her family and the circle of those with whom she shared personal movements.
Dr. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila highlighted the importance of community spaces such as the community hall, emphasising their role in fostering social cohesion, promoting cultural activities, and enhancing community engagement.
Also in attendance was the Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Utjiua Muinjangue.
Dr. Muinjangue emphasised the importance of infrastructure development, describing it as a cornerstone in fostering hope and unity in the community.
In his words, as he thanked the community, the widower, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula, said the community hall stands as a testament to the vision of a united and thriving community, promoting wellness, education, and collaboration.
He thanked everyone who assisted in making the dream of the community hall a reality.
The Elcin Etilyasa Parish also thanked Dr. Shangula for his dedication to developing the community and rewarded him with a certificate of appreciation.
