The City of Windhoek emerged as the overall winner of the 2026 National Local Authorities Sports and Recreation Association (NALASRA) Games, which brought together 43 local authorities and about 1,500 employees from across Namibia.

According to NALASRA President Daniel Mouton, the games recorded a significant increase in participation compared to previous editions. Mouton said NALASRA hopes to see all 59 local authorities represented at future editions as the event continues to expand.

While noting the overall success of the event, Mouton revealed that structural challenges were experienced, particularly regarding compliance with eligibility rules, which disrupted the flow of competition.“I think one of the biggest challenges is that some of the municipalities are not using their employees or temporary employees, and it's not allowed. This caused a lot of disruption, especially with the football,” Mouton said.

Despite these challenges, Mouton commended the Grootfontein Municipality for its operational efficiency, specifically for maintaining the sporting facilities in excellent condition throughout the week-long games.

Looking ahead, NALASRA will continue with its regional sporting programme as it transitions into preparations for upcoming domestic and cross-border fixtures.“We will have our soccer games in September with Eswatini, which will be the last games for the year. Next year, the process will start all over again, and the next host for the NALASRA games will be Oranjemund,” Mouton added.

He expressed hope that local authority councillors across the country will continue to support NALASRA's vision of promoting wellness, networking, unity, and the sharing of best practices through sub-national sport.
