Swanu President Evalistus Kaaronda described the late Alfred Angula as a tireless advocate for workers’ rights and one of Africa's most committed and influential trade union leaders whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Angula, a prominent figure in Namibia's trade union movement, passed away on 31 December 2024, aged 59. He served as Secretary-General (SG) of the Namibia Farmworkers Union (NAFWU) and Acting SG of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW).

In his tribute to the late Angula on Tuesday, Kaaronda, during an interview with Nampa, said Namibia has lost a dedicated trade unionist who, through his contributions both locally and globally, made a mark in labour issues and occupational health and safety.

"I consider him as a man who has made his mark on a global scale, as much as he has made his mark here at home. Angula was one of the trade unions' sharpest occupational health and safety experts,” said Kaaronda.

He added that Angula’s impressive academic background, including a master's degree obtained in Germany with a specialisation in occupational health and safety, set him apart in the labour movement.

"In that sense, Angula was exceptional. His passing could not have come at a worse time, as this is when people need to tap into the experience, expertise, and knowledge of people like him," he said.

Reflecting on Angula’s character, Kaaronda recalled numerous occasions when Angula offered his help and advice without hesitation.

He was always ready to assist and share his expertise whenever called upon; without any qualms, he added.

"During my tenure as SG of the NUNW, Angula was assigned to support both NAFWU and the Namibia Domestic and Allied Workers Union (DAWU), and he effectively served with dedication as acting SG in both unions at the time,” Kaaronda said.
