||Kharas Governor Aletha Frederick has said that the significant drop in the region's academic performance cannot be overlooked.
Fredericks, who made the remarks during the official opening of the 2025 academic year, reiterated that the drop is not merely a statistic but represents lost opportunities for learners and communities.
In the 2023 academic year, the ||Kharas was ranked among the top three best-performing regions in the country. But, in the most recent 2024 results, the region has dropped to 11th position in the National Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, while in the Advance Subsidiary Level, it dropped two places from 12th position to 14th position.
"This decline is not merely a statistic; it represents lost opportunities for our learners and communities. We must confront this reality head-on and engage in proper assessment and introspection to understand what went wrong. Conversely, we must also critically examine the factors that impeded our progress in 2024."
Some of the factors that Frederick highlighted to develop targeted strategies to regain the region's education standing in the country include lack of resources, inadequate infrastructure, lack of teaching materials and gaps in communication.
Fredericks equally called on parents and guardians to play their part in ensuring the academic success of learners.
"For education to fulfill its purpose, we must focus on robust administration that addresses both the challenges in school management and those within the classroom itself. strong leadership within schools fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation. Administrators must engage with teachers to identify specific challenges they face in their classrooms. This two-way communication ensures that solutions are tailored to meet the unique needs of each school community."
The Education Director for the ||Kharas region Jasmine Magerman explained the significance of the gathering.
"We must remember the importance of our work. We are not just here to receive a salary at the end of the month; what we are doing should be of quality and should be testimony to who we are and what we stand for, and we must always remember that our work has an impact on education deliverance at schools and hostels in the region, so I ask everybody to strive to create a safe and nurturing environment wherever we go at our schools and at the regional office to ensure that our teachers and learners can work with confidence and learners can learn with confidence that everybody can grow to their fullest potential."
