President Nangolo Mbumba has described the late liberation stalwart Sacky Amunyela as a selfless individual whose patriotism saw him sacrifice his life to see a free Namibia during his youthful years.

Amunyela, well known as Mbwiti, died aged 75 on the 8th of January after a short illness and was buried today at Onayena in the Oshikoto region.

Mourners converged at late Amunyela's homestead in Oludila village for a memorial service where they reminisced on his life in both pre and post Namibia's independence.

The late Amunyela went into exile in 1972 at the age of 22 pursuing his quest to fight for Namibia's freedom.

Amongst some of the notable positions he held was that of deputy engineer commander and played a key role in establishing a base on the eastern front in Namibia.

He also served in a military mission in Kavango region in 1974 and during that time he sustained significant injuries in the battle against South African apartheid forces.

In a message read on his behalf, president Mbumba praised him for his dedication to seeing a free and liberated Namibia.

"Comrade Amunyela's journey was one of patriotism, courage and selflessness. Among other notable attributes he will be fondly remembered for his unwavering dedication to the pursuance of liberty, justice and equality for Namibia and her people. His steadfast commitment to the liberation of Namibia began in 199 WHEN HEJOINED swapo party following expulsion from Ongwediva Seminary due to his political activism during the 1960s."

In their tributes, Founding president Sam Nujoma and former President Hifikepunye Pohamba in messages delivered on their behalf were in unison in describing him as fearless and a dependable cadre.

"We have lost not only a dependable cadre, but also a loyal and faithful servant of the Namibian people who had many virtues."

Amunyela is survived by his wife Elise and four sons.
