Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi has dismissed claims that the Namibian Police Force changed its investigating team in the ongoing diamond heist at NAMDIA.
Responding to media queries, Deputy Commissioner Shikwambi said that the case is now before the courts, and NAMPOL’s Public Relations Unit is no longer at liberty to communicate any further information regarding the matter.
"The key investigating officers who have been part of the investigation since that night remain part of the task force, as constituted by the Inspector General," Shikwambi clarified.
She added that Commissioner Nellius Becker and his forensic team are providing forensic and analytical support to the investigation.
“We need to be patient and allow the investigators to do their work. By all means, we must avoid jeopardising the investigation and the ultimate prosecution,” she said.
Shikwambi also urged the public to understand that legal and court processes are typically gradual and encouraged patience as the case proceeds.
Police Chief, Inspector General Josef Shikongo, last week promised that the police will soon hold a press briefing to update the nation on the progress made in the violent diamond robbery that rocked NAMDIA.
He said this would be done to maintain public trust.
The exact value and quantity of the stolen diamonds remain unknown.
