Rwanda has reaffirmed its stance on the ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Rwanda's High Commissioner to Namibia, Emmanuel Hategeka, says his country stands with Namibia in calling for a peaceful resolution to the crisis, as clashes between the DRC government forces and the M23 rebels continue to escalate.
Despite accusations that Rwanda is backing the M23 rebels, Kigali has repeatedly denied any involvement.
Speaking to nbc News, Hategeka reiterated his country's position after presenting his letters of credence to President Nangolo Mbumba at State House earlier today.
"Absolutely, Rwanda is rooting for peace and stability, not only in our region but also on the entire continent. That is why Rwanda is a major peace-contributing country when it comes to peacekeeping forces on the continent and globally. The issues in eastern DRC are a concern to all of us. We all believe that all peace-loving leaders should be looking at the root causes of the crisis and opting for political solutions as opposed to military solutions."
Touching on the bilateral relations with Namibia, the Rwandan diplomat said his country's government is eager to widen the scope of cooperation in key areas.
"Our areas of mutual focus include cooperation in agriculture, tourism, education, ICT, and related services, but also cooperation in the multilateral fora in exchange for ideas on our common positions and our common interests."
High Commissioner Hategeka is concurrently accredited to Namibia and South Africa, with the mission based in Pretoria.
