The United Nations has hosted a special commemorative ceremony in honour of the late Founding President of Namibia, Dr Sam Nujoma, at its New York headquarters.
Namibia's Ambassador to the United Nations, Neville Gertze, at the event, pointed out that the late President Nujoma believed in the power of unity, the need for dialogue and in the promise of national reconciliation as the foundation of nation-building.
Ambassador Gertze pointed out that one of the the late Dr Nujoma's signature achievements towards reconciliation in post-independent Namibia was the successful establishment of the national defence force that has brought together former People's Liberation Army of Namibia, PLAN, fighters and its erstwhile arch enemies in the South West Africa Territorial Forces, SWATF, and Koevoet.
Gertze noted that the success of this inconceivable, perhaps evenincomprehensible experiment, is today a shining example of his vision for “One Namibia – One Nation”.
In a heartfelt personal reflection and tribute, the late Dr Nujoma's brother, Noah Nujoma recalled a young, compassionate and generous Nujoma who was always willing to share anything and everything with his family and siblings.
Noah stated his heart is heavy and full of sadness as his family and the rest of Namibia mourn the passing away of his eldest brother, the first elected President of an independent Namibia.
He stated that his life was a testament of his relentless drive to make life better for every Namibian.
"His legacy will live on', says Noah Nujoma.
