The Judiciary has dismissed allegations by activist and politician Dr. Job Amupanda, who claimed on social media that the institution operates in secrecy and is appointing a second Deputy Judge-President for the main division in Windhoek without public disclosure.
Amupanda criticised the perceived lack of information, arguing that the position is significant, carries power, and therefore requires greater transparency.
In a statement, the Judiciary reaffirmed its commitment to impartiality and adherence to constitutional processes.
Vikitoria Hango, spokesperson at the Judiciary, labelled Amupanda’s assertions as misinformation aimed at undermining the Judiciary’s integrity and transparency.
"The Judiciary executes its constitutional mandate independently and is solely accountable to the Constitution and the law," said Hango.
Regarding judicial appointments, the Judiciary clarified that the process follows established legal frameworks, including the Judicial Service Commission Regulations.
Hango confirmed that the appointment of Deputy Judge(s)-President aligns with efforts to strengthen the Judiciary’s capacity and improve the administration of justice. The previous Deputy Judge-President was appointed to the Supreme Court as a Judge of Appeal in late 2024.
nbc News has learned that Judges Orben Sibeya, Shafimana Ueitele, and Hannelie Prinsloo have been recommended for the newly created second Deputy Judge-President position. However, the Judiciary insisted that all appointments are made through proper legal procedures, with relevant organisations duly informed to submit nominations by the set deadlines.
The Judiciary also defended its transparency, stating that it has consistently tabled annual reports detailing its activities and resource allocations.
“The public is encouraged to engage with relevant judicial authorities or consult official platforms for accurate information,” concluded Hango.
The Judiciary urged the public to refrain from casting unfounded aspersions on judges, warning that such actions risk eroding confidence in an institution dedicated to delivering justice with impartiality and integrity.
