Social justice activist Shaun Gariseb is concerned about NamPower's proposed bulk tariffs of over 17%, saying the increase will have a negative impact on vendors who will be forced to mark up their prices.
Gariseb suggested that the Electricity Control Board (ECP) look into ways to engage with communities before crucial decisions are made regarding price adjustments on tariffs.
Nampower was granted an 8% bulk tariff increase last year and is requesting a 17.44% bulk tariff increase for the 2025/26 financial year.
Gariseb proposed that a multi-year tariff be adopted and a new national tariff study be carried out since the company still relies on the same recommendation of circumstances released in 2001.
The social justice activist pointed out that electricity is not a luxury and should be considered a basic need, as many rely on it to carry out their daily activities.
