Ghana's former ruling party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has directed its members to cease discussions that create disaffection within the party in the media.

In a statement, the NPP acknowledged the disappointment and emotional distress caused by its defeat in the 2024 general elections. The party lost its majority in the Ghanaian Parliament, securing only 88 seats against President John Mahama's National Democratic Congress' 183 seats.

The NPP said many members have expressed anger and frustration on several platforms and appealed for calm among the party faithful at this time.

''As an officer of the Party, mandated by the Party's Constitution under Article 10 (7)(5) to coordinate the activities and operations of the Party, please note that all Party members are hereby directed to immediately cease discussing Party issues that create unrest, negativism and disaffection in the media and other related platforms,'' read the statement authored by General Secretary John Frimpong.

He said the party's leadership at all levels would refer any member who violates the directive to appropriate disciplinary committees.

Ghana's former president, Nana Akufo-Addo, is the leader of the NPP.
