A viral WhatsApp message prompted nbc news to inspect Windhoek’s cemeteries after recent rains. At Dolam Cemetery, most graves were unharmed, though overgrown grass and weeds were an issue. A few showed minor damage.
Gammams Cemetery in Pioneerspark fared worse, with some tombstones affected by the weather.
A funeral undertaker, who asked not to be named, warned against permanent grave structures. "It's best not to construct permanent graveside structures for now," the undertaker said. "The ground is too unstable, and it’s difficult to guarantee their longevity due to the weather."
Families were advised to check gravesites regularly for rain damage and perform maintenance as needed.
