The Ruacana Constituency Councillor's office has distributed food to over 90 households affected by flooding caused by heavy rain.

The displaced individuals come from Otjihitua and Omahenene Villages in the Omusati Region.

Ruacana Councillor Andreas Shintama, alongside the Regional Disaster Management Committee, delivered the food items during their visit to the affected areas.

The drought relief food distribution included bags of maize meal, canned fish, and cooking oil.

"These individuals from Otjihitua Village are located in two constituencies, Ruacana and Onesi, and have found themselves here after their homes and fields were flooded. The number of affected households is increasing daily as the rain persists. Initially, we relocated 52 households, but we now have approximately 94 households, including the elderly, children, and 384 youths."

The flooding has also submerged crop fields, exacerbated by floodwaters from Angola.

The councillor's office, in collaboration with other stakeholders such as the police and the Namibian Defence Force (NDF), has set up tents at Etunda to shelter the affected families.

One of those impacted is Fenny Shomongula, who shared, "This year caught us off guard. We cultivated our fields well, but you'll be surprised to see that all our crops are underwater. Some vehicles in our homes couldn't even move due to the flooding."

Shintama has written to the Prime Minister's office to seek further assistance for those affected.

The relocated individuals are in urgent need of mattresses and additional food supplies.
