NamPower has issued a warning to communities along the Kunene River to be vigilant for potential flooding in the coming days.

The power utility reports that heavy rainfall in southern Angola has resulted in substantial volumes of water flowing towards Ruacana.

Consequently, on Monday, March 31, 2025, it will open the second floodgate of the diversion weir at the power station, increasing the river flow to over 1,600 cubic meters per second.

This extreme high river flow, not seen since 2011, is expected to cause significant flooding downstream of the Ruacana Power Station.

Residents in the area and those downstream are advised to evacuate low-lying areas immediately, move livestock and equipment to higher ground, and stay clear of the riverbanks, as the water level may rise unexpectedly.

Lodges and campsites in the vicinity should also heed the flood warning and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of themselves and their guests.

Additionally, residents and visitors are urged to avoid the edges of the river and refrain from all activities near the water.
