The University of Namibia (UNAM)'s School of Medicine has inaugurated a pharmacy at the Hage Geingob Campus in Khomasdal.

The regional centre, a first of its kind in Namibia and only the second on the continent, is expected to prepare students for lifelong professional careers in the pharmaceutical industry.

The pharmacy's objectives are to promote equity of access to healthcare services and contribute to the academic and professional development of qualified pharmacists.

Vice Chancellor of UNAM, Professor Kenneth Matengu, said the centre looks forward to catering to staff, students and the community at large.

The campus pharmacy is to be stocked with acute and chronic prescription medicines, as well as over-the-counter medicines and general supplies.

"This university is committed to living according to what the act prescribes—that we should be producing capable human resources that are competent to develop this country, and that's what we do by availing ourselves of such facilities that students can learn in practice."

The pharmacy will operate as a retail community pharmacy and is registered with the Health Professions Council of Namibia.
