High Court Judge Anne-Doris Hans-Kaumbi has ordered that activist Michael Amushelelo be detained at the Windhoek Correctional Facility's trial awaiting section until Wednesday.

The judge found that the activist made contemptuous utterances stemming from remarks he made during his court appearance on contempt of court.

Amushelelo appeared before the court in response to an urgent application, where he is being sued for N$1 million due to alleged contemptuous conduct by Police Chief Joseph Shikongo.

During the proceedings, Amushelelo criticised the judiciary, labelling judicial officers "puppets who answer to their appointing authority" and further saying that "judges believe they are little gods because of their titles."

The presiding judge cautioned Amushelelo numerous times and repeatedly asked him if he wants to reconsider his statements, but the activist stood firm.

Judge Hans-Kaumbi found these statements, among others, such as likening her courtroom to a circus, to be contemptuous and convicted him of contempt of court.

Amushelelo also wanted the judge to recuse herself from hearing the initial matter of Joseph Shikongo, but Judge Hans-Kaumbi noted that Amushelelo failed to provide evidence of bias.

Hanse-Kaumbi explained that she had pronounced herself on Amushelelo's behaviour in her courtroom and is therefore compelled to refer the police chief's urgent application back to the registrar for reassignment to another judge, but not because the accused asked for her recusal.

Amushelelo is scheduled to appear before Judge Hans-Kaumbi again on Wednesday, where he will address her on why he should not be sentenced for contempt of court.
