As the National Assembly continued deliberations on the 2025/26 Appropriation Bill at the committee stage, members of Parliament called for urgent reforms to improve worker protection and modernise the labour system.
These calls were made during debates on the more than N$250 million budget allocation to the Department of Labour Relations.
MPs raised concerns about poor working conditions in the rural and domestic sectors, weak enforcement by labour inspectors, and delays in addressing workplace harassment.
They also urged the minister to upgrade outdated systems and introduce digital tools to help job seekers more easily access employment opportunities.
Minister Wise Immanuel confirmed that longstanding concerns about labour justice, workplace protection, and outdated employment systems were receiving attention.
He assured the National Assembly that the government is committed to transforming the nation's labour environment to meet the demands of a changing economy, while also challenging social partners and unions to engage more consistently in shaping that transformation.
