Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi has announced the closure of the Oranjemund-Rosh Pinah road after water from the Orange River crept up to the road surface, posing a serious safety risk.
Giving an update in the National Assembly, the minister said the road has become too dangerous to keep open, especially overnight, as the water continues to rise.
To ensure continued access, the ministry is engaging with mining company NAMDEB to possibly open a nearby gravel road between Lüderitz and Oranjemund for public use. In the meantime, road users are urged to make use of the alternative route through South Africa, which remains accessible.
Nekundi assured the public that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will reopen the road once it is safe to do so.
