President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has praised the Omagongo Festival as a vital platform for honouring tradition and reaffirming the commitment to preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
In her address, President Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasised that the event serves as a reminder for unity, cooperation, and respect within communities and the nation.
Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah also commended the late Founding President Sam Nujoma for initiating the annual celebration, which continues to unite Namibians.
She added that the Omagongo Festival embodies the spirit of the ancestors and stands as a testimony to the strength and resilience of the Namibian people.
"Traditionally, the Omagongo season has a special meaning; it is a period of happiness, a peaceful period to appreciate Mother Nature for the gift of a good harvest and of different beverages. We know that during Omagongo people are not allowed to carry any weapon, and traditional courts are all suspended; hence, most people drink it, representing other drinks like ombike, omalodu and oshikundu. Some people sing loudly."
The Omagongo Festival will be hosted by the Uukwaluudhi and Uukwambi traditional authorities next year.
This follows a decision made last year by Herman Iipumbu, the chairperson of the eight traditional authorities.
Ohangwena Governor Sebastian Ndeitunga described the festival as a symbol of unity as Namibians gather to celebrate a beverage that has become an essential part of the culture of Aawambo.
Oukwanyama Traditional Authority was selected to share the hosting of the festival with the Ombandja Traditional Authority, which is expected to host the second leg of the event later this year.
The message of Oukwanyama Traditional Authority's Ohamba Martha Nelumbu was delivered on her behalf.
The Governor of Cunene Province in Angola also attended the event.
The event was filled with entertainment, such as horse riding and cultural performances.
